Dialectic Journal - 1984

Quote

1) “In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it.”

Explanation

1) What this means to me is that the Party has huge control of the peoples minds, and they also have a lot of propaganda. The quote says that the party has so much power and control, that if they say 2+2=5 then you have to believe it or you might get killed. This relates to the real world because in china when the communists first took rule, started to go into peoples homes without permission, but the people didn’t and couldn’t do anything.

MUN Reflection

By Jesus Olvera
Part I: My Performance
I think I did a god job because I went on some speakers list and I made some comments. Not only did I get points for going up and talking I also made some meaningful comments. Overall I thought I participated and got involved in many caucuses and that's what made me do well.

Part II: MUN Overall Reflection
I thought MUN wasn't very fun, it could be funner. It was like waiting in the DMV except you talk about world problems. All you did was sit in a room with a bunch of bored or nervous people that don't really care about this, and discuss solutions to problems in the world. We should make MUN more fun and more exciting. I felt that MUN was dull and cold; in order to change this we should make it more exciting and less strict. We could decorate the room to make the MUN environment better and make the chairs more enthusiastic and less strict. We could also put little appetizers during caucuses like carrots and ranch, or chips, or fruit, etc. well that's what I thought about MUN and remember, this doesn't apply to everyone.

Socratic Seminar: The Legacy Of Columbus

By Jesus Olvera
Section I: Reflection on Performance

A) I thought the topic of the Socratic seminar couldn't be discussed well; it wasn't "juicy" enough. That's why I didn't say a lot. What I said was my knowledge and memories of Columbus Day in elementary school. I talked about how my teacher used to dress up like Columbus and wear a silly hat and carry a pumpkin (I don't know why). But what they showed my in elementary school was that he was a kind friendly man, but I didn't know that he killed a lot of people until 8th grade. My performance was low because I wasn't passionate and didn't participate, so I thought I did pretty badly.

B) I though the group did well, except for some people (including me) who didn't say anything. But other than that, the group was passionate and really into it. Some people got really deep and made connections about Columbus’s expedition to other people in history, which proves they know what they are talking about.

Section II: Reflection on Content - Answering the Essential Question

A) Columbus day shouldn't be a holiday because he really didn't discovery anything and he killed may people in his conquest of God, gold, and glory.

B) I was surprised that some people agreed with me. I didn't think some people would say Columbus Day shouldn't be a holiday because he didn't accomplish a lot. But some people said that it should be a holiday and we should get a day off because we need to rest and that we work really hard. Others said we should use this day to learn about him and honor him.

C) Christopher Columbus shouldn't have a holiday because he didn't find India, he didn't even find America! He shouldn't have a holiday because he killed many innocent natives just for gold and glory. His mission was to trade with India and connect Europe and Asia, but he never did! Here's proof that he never went to America or Asia:Columbus Day was created because people were lazy, not really for education. Columbus Day is celebrating murder and greed because in the packet Ms Golub gave us says that he burned people alive, cut their hands off, and ripped open their stomachs; including women, children, and the elderly. If we celebrate Columbus Day, we might as well make O.J. Simpson Day.

Chinese Dynastic History and Achievements

By Jesus Olvera
Group (2200-206 B.C.): In the beginning and early years of civilizations, The Chinese were the best at advancing. They had the First emperor, and were the first to domesticate silk, rice, soy and pottery. China made history that would affect the world up to this day. From 2200-206 B.C., they invented writing and literature, used and invented things of Iron because it was cheaper and strong then bronze, were the Fist to use Horses in combat, labor, and transportation, and made two great teachers and philosophers: Buddha (Creator of Buddhism, Lao Tse (Taoism), and Confucius (Confucianism).

Me (206 B.C. - 1911 A.D.): After the end of the Qin dynasty and the birth of Jesus, the Chinese got really serious. They used the Silk Road trading route to get and give silk and other goods to other places or countries. They had great inventions like the hot air balloon, the wheelbarrow, and the irrigation system, paper money, and made copper into coins. There was also a lot of war and conflict at that time. Also Marco Polo goes to China and presents new ideas and inventions, Confucianism, poetry, and art to China. The end of the Qing dynasty marked the beginning of the Republic of China.

Dialectic Journal - Siddhartha

Category: , , By Jesus Olvera
Quotes:

1) “Om is the bow, the arrow is the soul, the Brahman is the arrow’s goal, which should be hit unswervingly”
2) "You will go into the forest and be a Samana. When you have found blissfulness in the forest, then come back and teach me to be blissful. If you'll find disappointment, then return and let us once again make offerings to the gods together.”
3) “A goal stood before Siddhartha, a single goal: to become empty, empty of
Thirst, empty of wishing, empty of dreams, empty of joy and sorrow.”
4) “Oh Siddhartha, you have learned more from the Samanas than I knew. It is hard; it is very hard to cast a spell on an old Samana. Truly, if you had stayed there, you would soon have learned to walk on water. I do not seek to walk on water, said Siddhartha. Let old Samanas be content with such feats!"
5) "You have renounced home and parents, you have renounced your own will, and you have renounced friendship. That is what the teachings preach, that is the will of the Illustrious One. That is what you wished for yourself. Tomorrow, Govinda, I will leave you"
6) "I can think, I can wait, and I can fast"

What It Means:

1) What it meant was the meditation is om, and om is used to shoot your soul to Brahman, which is the target. The more you meditate the better you get with accuracy and precision.
2) What it meant was when the Brahman spoke he said: if you find what your looking for, then come back and tell me, but if you don’t, then come back and continue you old life.
3) What it means is his goal was to stop wishing, dreaming, being happy and feeling pain. When it says to become empty it means to remove what causes wishing, dreaming, being happy and feeling pain. How that relates to my life is when I did Ki Gong I needed to empty my mind of thoughts and think about my breathing.
4) What it means is that he could of got stronger, but he didn’t want to because he didn’t want to be with the Samanas anymore, and that’s a little greedy and greed causes pain. I don’t really know how this relates to my life
5) What it means is that Govinda has been under Siddhartha’s shadow for a while and has learned the ways of Buddha and there is really nothing Siddhartha can help him with anymore. How this relates to my life is when I was graduating into 9th grade, I left my teachers because I already knew everything so I didn’t really need them anymore.
6) What it means is Siddhartha said that because he was ready to follow Buddha before he changed his decision. How this relates to my life is when I was 5 I told my mom “12 x 12=24” to show her I was ready for 3rd grade (It didn’t work).

Socratic Seminar: Tao-Te-Ching

By Jesus Olvera
Today in class we were discussing two chapters of the Tao-Te-Ching, a book of Chinese philosophies about life. We were discussing chapters 48 and 71. I felt that my group (the group that was discussing chapter 48) had the best discussion out of our two groups. I feel this was because we were really thinking deep into out discussion and many people had great ideas and opinions. When I explained what this quote meant " Less and less do you need to force things, until finally you arrive at non-action. When nothing is done, nothing is left undone." I said it meant that when you stop doing things like doing homework, since you didn't do your homework you don't need to (it's confusing). Overall I thought the whole class did a good job, even though the other group was a little silent, they had good arguments.

My Ki Gong Expirence

By Jesus Olvera
When I first entered the karate studio, I felt like this was going to be an interesting experience. We were here to experience Ki Gong an ancient practice to make you relaxed, fit, and healthy. When I started to "stand like a tree" I felt dumb, but when I put my hands together and felt my chi like two magnets repealing each other, I was amazed. I also was surprised that it would actually work, and I was surprised no one had told me about chi and Ki Gong. I was amazed at first, but when we did the other chi exercises my chi had disappeared, and I got a little disappointed. But when we meditated I felt my shoulder throbbing and feeling weird. I remembered I hurt my shoulder a while ago and now it was telling me it was hurt. Chi can bring out injuries and heal them, plus in the end of class I felt like I had a lot of energy so Ki Gong benefits almost everything. Ki Gong is an amazing and interesting practice, I hope to eventually know more and practice Ki Gong in the future.

Vocab Test # 1 (9/12/08)

By Jesus Olvera
1) The main idea was, a man wants to build a "vertical farm"(a farm in a building) in the city so stores don't have to have get their food from far away. Also there are factors that can change the quality of the products and make land less fertile such as: weather, climate, and incests. In addition to that, it would take less work to create high quality products, because you don't have to worry about losing your livestock, or to cultivate your land. plus it would be easier to domesticate livestock since there aren't any determinants of death such as: disease, predators, etc.
2) Even though a vertical farm can produce better quality products, i don't think it's a solution to our energy crisis. In fact it's the exact opposite, it'll consume more energy. to codify an irrigation system through a 30 story skyscraper would use a lot of metal and water. Even the primitive stages of the building of uses a lot of minerals and energy, to build a 30 story building would use so many materials and energy which we could use elsewhere.
3) I'm a little in the Grey area in this whole thing. I don't really like the idea, it's not that it couldn't be built, we aren't nomadic people but it's the idea that it would use a lot of energy and would leave a lot of poor farmers sedentary. plus scientists would soon alter mother nature and crops and ruin life cycles, which some believe would angry Deities. I just hope those people know what their doing and find a way in which won't consume energy, but help us and the world.
